I could see the desktop GUI without a problem on a laptop I tried.
Steps:
1. Install Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS amd64 Server, reboot
2. Log in, connect to internet and do sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
3. After ubuntu-desktop packages are downloaded and installed, reboot
Lightdm shows up for user log in.

After some online research, there seems to be a problem with supporting Matrox graphics cards with the newer kernel.
