Bug Description

Steps to reproduce:
1. Install Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS server on Cisco C240 M3 server.
2. The installation goes through fine without any issues.
3. Once the installation is complete, Install the ubuntu-desktop packages using apt
4. The GUI never comes up and always throws a "Out of Range" on the monitor.

Reproducibility:
Always

Additional Info:

1.Tried using xrandr command and set the resolution using this command:
"xrandr --newmode $(cvt 1920 1080 60 | grep Mode | sed -e 's/.*"/1920x1080/')"-> Display does not come up.

2. Edited the grub /etc/default/grub
and uncommented the line "GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480" -> Display does not come up.

3. Edit the grub command prompt at boot and set the "nomodeset" -> This also fails to bring up the display.

Tried installing Ubuntu 12.04 LTS server on other server platforms, but the display always says "Out of Range"

Video controller: Matrox G200e

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.

This bug does not affect the system testing application (checkbox), so I'll reassign it to xorg as a starting point, this way it has a better chance of being looked at.

affects: checkbox → xorg-server

Hi Srini,

Could you go to tty2 (Ctrl+Shift+F2) and post output of xrandr to see what resolution options x detects?

Also try to install xserver-xorg-video-mga if it's not installed, and check if mga driver is loaded (lsmod |grep mga).

I could see the desktop GUI without a problem on a laptop I tried.
Steps:
1. Install Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS amd64 Server, reboot
2. Log in, connect to internet and do sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
3. After ubuntu-desktop packages are downloaded and installed, reboot
Lightdm shows up for user log in.

After some online research, there seems to be a problem with supporting Matrox graphics cards with the newer kernel.
