Thanks for the link to the discussion, I missed that one when I looked at the loop device this morning.
I think these a rather "radical" changes so late in Hardy, for example, one of the listed "disadvantages" impact loop encryption which some users will definitely miss. However, I think it's well worth considering this kind of approach for Hardy + 1, especially as these changes may be incorporated officially upstream with the necessary modifications to handle loop encryption.
