Im comparing GNOME3.2 and 2.x with KDE4.7. It may be true that KDE4 was slower in the beginning stages but atm i experience the opposite. KWin outperforms Compiz and everything feels much snappier. I suggest you try out Chakra and report your results because i sure was impressed how light and more advanced it felt compared to Ubuntu.
