Isn't this what happens if there's a bug? It affects some machines/configurations and not others. It's more difficult to identify it than to resolve it. I use Ubuntu 12.10 64-bit with the latest updates including Unity. I don't encounter any noticeable problems with any other software; I have a very good and stable configuration. And I didn't have such a problem when used this method: http://www.webupd8.org/2011/04/show-desktop-icon-for-ubuntu-unity.html
I've just reported this so as to hopefully make a small contribution to your efforts to improve this good software by possibly spotting and correcting a bug (if it really is a bug, of course ;-)
I preferred your method because it also allows restoring all windows when you click it again whereas the other one cannot do it although it doesn't have such a placement problem on my machine.
Isn't there any other information I can provide to help identify the cause of this problem?
