I'm experiencing this same issue, I think.
When trying to make an USB stick bootable using the following image:

http://ftp.ds.karen.hj.se/utils/ubcd/ubcd411.iso

unetbootin writes the following to the console and just hangs:

    rune@runescomp:~$ sudo /usr/bin/unetbootin 'rootcheck=no'
QProcessPrivate::createPipe: Cannot create pipe 0x895ff30: Too many open files
    QSocketNotifier: Invalid socket specified
QProcessPrivate::createPipe: Cannot create pipe 0x895ff30: Too many open files
    QSocketNotifier: Invalid socket specified
QProcessPrivate::createPipe: Cannot create pipe 0x895ff28: Too many open files
QProcessPrivate::createPipe: Cannot create pipe 0x895ff30: Too many open files
    QSocketNotifier: Invalid socket specified

I'm using the current version from Lucid:

rune@runescomp:~$ apt-cache policy unetbootin
unetbootin:
  Installed: 408-1ubuntu0.10.04.1
  Candidate: 408-1ubuntu0.10.04.1
