I'm experiencing this same issue, I think.
When trying to make an USB stick bootable using the following image:

http://ftp.ds.karen.hj.se/utils/ubcd/ubcd411.iso

unetbootin writes the following to the console and just hangs:

    rune@runescomp:~$ sudo /usr/bin/unetbootin 'rootcheck=no'

Files created by UNetbootin in /tmp Edit (25.3 KiB, application/x-tar)

I have the same result when using an ISO image created with multicd.sh, that included ubcd as in comment #2 but a more recent version "ubcd502.iso".

UNetbootin creates (at least that I've noticed) 996 "*.cfg" files in /tmp, which I guess is the problem.

I've tried again just using the "ubcd502.iso" image, and it creates again 996 files, which I've packaged and attached here.
The attachment extracts to a directory called "unetbootin-bug491020-tmp-cfg-files/" that contains the files.
