The installation of fglrx-updates went alright according to the log:

Setting up fglrx-updates (2:8.881-0ubuntu6) ...

DKMS: install Completed.

However, it seems it didn't install the alternatives correctly, or nvidia-common detects them wrongly:

Both reporters seem to confirm that the non-updates version (fglrx) worked fine, right?
