This looks to be fixed in Ubuntu 10.10 RC.

Uname: Linux 2.6.35-22-generic i686
Packages:
    evince 2.32.0-0ubuntu1
    poppler 0.14.3-0ubuntu1

I have poppler-data installed.

Please reopen if the problem is still occurring for you on Ubuntu 10.10.
