same problem on my 1.5GHz intel mac mini. it was very smooth with intrepid, hardy...
I run compiz-check, but it found no problem.

 Distribution: Ubuntu 9.04
 Desktop environment: GNOME
 Graphics chip: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
 Driver in use: intel
 Rendering method: AIGLX
