Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I just installed Jaunty Beta, and I noticed two things. First, Compiz is noticeably slower compared to Intrepid (for example minimizing/maximizing windows or using the Super+E effect is not as smooth), second there's horizontal tearing when I move windows or navigate through menus or use the expo effect.

For information I'm using normal desktop effect.

I must also add that scrolling (especially on certain websites like slashdot) is slower and more cpu intensive.

Its not just with composite enabled. Kwin with both compositing enabled and disabled on this chipset seem to have the same behaviour. Powertop also shows an increased number of wakeups.

Is video playback slow for you too?

I am also having the same issues as you.

Installing xserver-xorg-intel-2.4 apparently solves the problem!

Works fine for me.

Thanks Antonio,

I followed the instructions on the page linked on that page: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/IntelPerformance and found that using UXA fixed the issue for me.

I am using a toshiba with nvidia card, using the proprietary nvidia drivers on Jaunty.
Compiz is NOT enabled.
Same slow minimize and maximize effects; sluggish black frame animation. Takes an extra second for the desktop to be usable again.

Using video, through for example, vlc ,is slow and choppy.

 nvidia details:

driver version 96.43.10
GeForce 420 Go

Hardy had no problems such as these.

Also (another topic)
curious X behavior on ctrl-alt-f1
first time I use it in an x-session, it first instead of changing to prompt, skips this and automatically brings up X again. I know this because X takes a good 5 seconds for it to be up again.
the second time i try the ctrl-alt-f1 combination, it works. Down to prompt. ctrl-alt-f7 brings me up then again to X, after 5 seconds of blank black screen. Very slow.

It was noted that rolling the driver back resolved the problem. The latest intel driver also resolves the issue as well as others.

This sounds like upstream bug https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=20664 which is fixed upstream now.
