Here to report that Stefan Glasenhardt's workaround works perfectly.

I added the line:
Option "Legacy3d" "false"

to xorg.conf, which enabled hardware acceleration, allowing me to get to the desktop WITH compiz. Perfect!

I've attached the requested outputs.
