Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I've been getting some weird rendering errors on 3D apps on Intrepid since the Alpha 4 release. Yesterday I've downloaded the daily build (2008/08/28), which seems to have the newest Mesa and Intel driver (2.4.1) and the problem still persists.

Direct rendering is enabled, and those errors appears with and without Compiz enabled. The most common error I see are missing textures.

The performance is also slow, but this is was already being very slow (compared to Windows) on Hardy.

I've attached some files to try to help, case you need more information, just ask.

I get the "no TTM manager" at glxgears startup, but I think you're probably aware of this one.

Could you be more specific; what apps cause rendering errors and what kind of errors. Photos are nice. My 965GM doesn't seem to have any problems, and you have the same chip.

Hi,
Sorry, I think I was kind of precipitated on this bug report.

First of all, I'd like to point that I get rendering problems since Hardy, but they got worst on Intrepid. I'm attaching screenshots comparing Celestia running on Hardy in a Nvidia card and on the Intel X3100 card. I'll be also attaching photos comparing the same on intrepid, later.

Just as I stated before, on Windows Vista the same X3100 renders flawlessly.

Timo, or anyone else, if you have a chance, please tell me if I'm the only who gets this problem.

Sorry by the late, but now I'm uploading a picture from Intrepid (with all updates, 2008/09/09). It's the same Celestia image, but now you can notice that the texture is missing and there are lots of weird "pixels" through the image.

Celestia is not the only software where I get rendering problems, though. I work developing in Torque Game Engine, and I can notice that it renders correctly (but slow) in Hardy, and textures goes missing on Intrepid.

So the problem exists since Hardy, and got worst on Intrepid.

Please tell me what else can I provide to make this bug leave "incomplete" status.

I can confirm this. I have the same problem with Intel 965GM(X3100). Performance is degraded compared to hardy and there are missing textures(celestia looks just like on Roberto's screenshot). Performance was even worse and I was getting "Failed to initialize TTM buffer manager. Falling back to classic." message when running OpenGL applications till now but the last update improved things a little.

Hey guys,

I'm getting same bad GL rendering issues on my machine, which is an Acer Aspire One (945GME). I've just upgraded from Hardy (which worked fine) to Intrepid (actually, it was a format + fresh install).

Here's a screenshot of Google Earth. netbook-launcher has similar issues, mainly around the rendering of text.

Hey,

I can confirm the problems running Ubuntu 8.10 on a Dell Latitude D830 with a GMA 965. Frame rates in glxgears are just at about 600 fps, Google Earth shows distorted images (like in the screenshots of the earlier bug reports), Compiz works okay as long as one does not try to move a window over a running glxgears for example, KDE performance with 3D effects is very bad.

Hope this issue will be resolved soon.

Is this perhaps related with my bug 289106 ?

Carsten,

I have just installed the molecule viewer Avogadro. I get similarly distorted images like in your bug report #289106. Likewise, the canvas sometimes tends to stay on top of all other windows. I have run the program under Gnome with 3D effects enabled.

Thus I suggest you mark your bug report as a duplicate of this one.

I can confirm this bug.

I the X3100 is completely unusable with many 3D applications.

Is there any progress/update about the status of this bug?

Just found out that Compiz itself is also not without any problems: When you do Alt-Tab the icons in the lower right corner of the minimized windows are sometimes distorted.

Having done one more experiment: Turning off Compiz, Google Earth becomes somewhat usable again and the glxgears canvas doesn't stay on top if I move another window over it. On the other hand, the performance of 3D rendering is still as bad.

We thus seem to have have two bugs here that may be related:

1) AIXGL (Compiz) and 3D (EXA acceleration) aren't working together properly.

2) The 3D performance is much lower than in Hardy.

I am using KWin and have the same issues. Therefore it is not about Compiz.

Is KWin also working with AIXGL? Then it is still likely that 1) is true (add a reference to KWin, of course).

This bug describes the same issues as bug 252094, which is already marked as "confirmed". Thus I will mark this bug as a duplicate of bug 252094.

Is this really a duplicate of bug 252094?

Bug 252094 is about poor performance (framerates). This bug is about rendering errors.

Bug 252094 was originally filed against hardy (Ubuntu 8.04.1). This bug describes a regression since hardy.

Right, this should not be marked as a duplicate. Bug #252094 has degenerated into a complaints forum. This bug OTOH should focus on the actual rendering errors reported by Roberta. Those who do not have exactly the same issues as Roberto should file new bugs and not comment here.

The rendering glitches discussed here looks pretty different (not all of them were on 965 either), but some of them might be the confirmed 965 issue described here:

There have been some significant improvements with -intel on Jaunty. Can you please test against Jaunty Alpha 4 or newer? When you test, please check both "EXA" and "UXA" AccelMethod's.

I suspect this may be a mesa bug rather than -intel but we'll leave it here for the time being.

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.
