Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Hello my Fujitsu Stylistic 4110p worked till the 2:2.2.1-1ubuntu13.6 update was installed. Now xorg comes up with white color effects on a black screen. Black lines appear till the whole screen turns white. The system is reachable by ssh, so it ist running in the background.

The i915 do the same, so no driver is capable to produce a working screen. Some info an quirked loglines

The 4110p was basicly installed with 6.06 dapper and updated to hardy, everything was fine before the xserver-xorg-video-intel update was installed. Who can confirm this bug?

For starters, it's not using the intel driver, but vesa. Can you try a livecd to see it's the upgrade that resulted in breaking it, rather than then new driver.

I can confirm this on my Fujistu Stylistic ST4120p , since my upgrade from gutsy to intrepid ( yeah, I know... ) Video is broken.
The i810 driver seems to be a stub for the intel driver, which does not work ( and never worked ) with the Fujitsu Stylistic Devices.

I attached the Xorg.log with the i810 driver configured.

Lets go on, have boot my stylistic 4110p with intrepid. Normal and reduced graphics, found

the display does the same like older ubuntu versions, i append a picture for you. Is there a possible fix or workaround?

We'd like to forward your bug upstream, however upstream requires
that you first test it against their newer driver code.

To save you the effort of building the driver from source, we've built
packages for the driver and its new dependencies.

So you have a couple options:

 1. Download and test .debs for intrepid, from:
     https://edge.launchpad.net/~intel-gfx-testing/+archive

 -or-

 2. Download and test the Jaunty alpha-2 (or newer) Live CD,
(which includes a beta of the new xserver 1.6 as well).
     See http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/9.04/ for ISOs

Thanks ahead of time! You can simply reply to this email to report your
findings.

P.S., if you wish to forward your bug upstream yourself, please follow
these directions to do so:

I have sold the stylistic 4110P after this long term of problems (3 years). Hope nobody will ever buy such slate for use anything else but the producers official supported operating systems. Fujitsu should stay ashamed for their politics.

Maybe someone other out for checking the driver now?

Thanks for letting us know; sorry it had such problems. Since the HW isn't available for testing I'll close out this bug. If someone else with this hardware can reproduce the issue on Jaunty, feel free to reopen.

I have updated my st4121 from Hardy to Jaunty but the bug is not fixed jet. The old i810 driver worked ..

in the above links i did not find Jaunty test packages. Is there some way to track the error down. The 830 chip set should be supported by the intel driver.

I can confirm this bug is still present on my ST4120P with 9.04 Jaunty rendering it useless - same X server errors as werthtobi posted.

I can also confirm the old i810 driver worked fine before it was removed.

Hi,
my laptop is a Fujitsu-Siemens Lifebook S6010 (7 years old, Intel I830 graphics). I have the same error:
The Xserver dies with
(EE) intel(0): sil164 not detected got 5: from DVOC2C_E Slave 112
(EE) intel(0): tfp410 not detected got VID 1305: from DVOI2C_E Slave 112
(EE) intel(0): No valid modes and
(EE) Screeen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration

Now, this error appeared when I upgraded from hardy to intrepid and remains after the upgrade to jaunty.

My first thought was a hardware error, so I tried BartPE (CD-bootable Windows), I also tried Knoppix (sorry, don't know which version, used a friend's CD). Both work fine.

Now I've been trying lots of different modifications to xorg.conf for almost every evening a whole week. I used both VESA and INTEL drivers, tried different bit depths, tried different driver options, etc. The only thing I didn't try yet is using a completed xorg.conf, with the screen section. As it seems to me, support for the old intel graphics chips (i810,i815,i830) is not good anymore - is there at least enough of the driver left to run X at the monitor's resolution for 2D applications?

Please, I'm desparately looking for a description, how to keep the old laptop running.

Thanks...

A new major version of the -intel driver is now available in Karmic.

This version includes a major reworking of the acceleration
architecture, which resolves a huge number of issues. We do not know
whether it resolves the issue you reported.

Would you mind testing Karmic Alpha-2 and seeing if it is still a
problem? CD ISO images are available here:

  http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/

If the issue can still be reproduced on karmic, please report here with
your findings, and attach a fresh Xorg.0.log from your test, and we will
be able to forward the bug upstream.

Otherwise, if the bug no longer exists in Karmic, let us know that as
well.

In the off chance you encounter different bugs while attempting to test
Karmic, please report those as new bug reports.

Hi,

Thanks for the update.

Unfortunately, it didn't help. The system boots fine until starting X. After a long while the screen fills with garbage and grows brighter. More garbage...

As far as I understand it from the comments, the driver isn't able to initialize the I2C communication with the monitor. At least the vesa driver cannot find a suitable screen mode and thus exits. The intel driver just aborts early.

Testing the device with a different operating system (Windows, Knoppix) indicates that the hardware is in working order. An older Ubuntu version (7.10) installs and works.

Would it be possible to check the parts of the code concerning i2c inside the intel driver?

Thanks!

Attach your Xorg.0.log and Xorg.0.log.old from after attempting a boot. If you're booting from a LiveCD you may need to switch to a console and copy it to a USB key, or similar.

I'm closing out this bug. The original issue expired, and people are just reopening it with incomplete info. If you have this hardware and are still seeing the bug, please report a NEW bug about it - see http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Reporting for directions on how to do this.
