Bug Description

About once a day, Xorg freezes on me. Running Xubuntu 12.04 on a dell L502X laptop.

The mouse is still moveable and I am able to SSH into the laptop but suspend/resume or using ctrl-alt-F1 and ctrl-alt-F7 does not work anymore.

I use the acpi_call module to disable the second GPU (nVidia) as it cuts down the fan noise and saves energy/battery.

I had hopes the 3.2.0-25-generic kernel would bring a fix to this (see bug 975689) but it keeps occurring. Incidentally but regularly (about once every 1-2 days).

The Xorg.0.log shows:

[ 64680.675] [mi] EQ overflowing. Additional events will be discarded until existing events are processed.

Sorry but I dismissed the "things to append" text. What logs / info should I append?

Please enable the -proposed repository, and install the kernel found there (-26). It has further fixes that might fix it.

After enabling the -proposed repo experienced 1,5 day without hangup.

I will test it for some more days. If everything seems stable, I will report back!

I am declaring this bug as solved.

It has been stable for the entire last week (8h/day developing and keeping it in suspend mode going home).

Thanks!

I'm still suffering from this problem with -27. X freezes for me once every 2-3 days. The symptons are as you describe. It seems to be a regression from 11.10.

3.2.0-27-generic #43-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jul 6 14:25:57 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

At the time of the freeze /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state says "no error state collected"

I've installed mainline 3.4 to see if the problem goes away.

The Xorg.log also the same as me (the stack trace bit)? The system has been solid for me in the mean time.

I am running happily on (relevant bits fro uname -a):

3.2.0-27-generic #43-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jul 6 14:25:57 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Chris

BTW: the /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state always says "no error state collected" on my laptop.

I'm using 3.4.0-030400-generic from the mainline PPA and I haven't had a single freeze since I installed it. I've been using the machine a lot more than normal over the last week as well.

Closing the bug, thanks Chris for testing and reporting back!

DDC, please file a new bug if you haven't already.
