Slogger, I am also AGP graphics and have update the big report to reflect this. You tease out a good point that people need to list when they post their specs.
I just tried out your commands. No dice. This is what happens:
1) F6 at start screen to bring up boot parameters.
2) Remove "splash" and hit enter.
3) I see the following for a few minutes:
"[17179576.380000] usb 1-1:device not accepting address 2, error -71"
4) scroll after a few minutes that quickly leads to login: ubuntu@ubuntu:
5) However, whether I type ctrl+alt+F1 through F6, or "GDM" or "sudo nano..." the screen flips over to, I think, X (before I can even finish typing a command often) and I hit the same black screen again.
