It worked fine in Jaunty and I think also some days/weeks ago in Karmic.

The description edit function seems to be broken in Launchpad btw..

Same thing happens with ATI mobility X1400 (M54) on Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop. Worked fine in Jaunty.

Could you also confirm it in the upstream report?

On Karmic beta liveCD, the bug is not present, there I can successfully switch to a VT with Ctrl-Alt-F1. So this nails it down to three cases:

1) There is a difference between beta and present

2) There is a difference between liveCD and permanent installation

3) We have all unknowingly changed our configuration in a way that makes the bug appear.

For case 3, I did try the restricted fglrx drivers, which I then uninstalled later. The installation/uninstallation was done through jockey (system -> admin -> proprietary drivers).

Also, at boot time, during a few seconds, I get a screen showing blue pixels in the middle of the screen. This was not present on the live-CD either, and I think it was not present at the first times I booted the permanent installation either. It's hard to know if it is related, but if it is, it rules out case 2.

Case 1 could be confirmed or ruled out using a daily-live CD.

Would be interesting to know if you have similar experiences.

I'm going to switch package on this one. I have done some more testing and found that:

- both fglrx and video-ati drivers show this problem

- however, when I boot kernel 2.6.31-11 the problem is gone!
- both kernel 2.6.31-12 and 2.6.31-13 have the bug present

affects: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu) → linux (Ubuntu)

Hm, it also happens with 2.6.32-rc4 without KMS.

This seems to be fixed with latest updates. Probably 2.6.31-14 or the new radeon driver.

This seems to be fixed in current Ubuntu so I guess it is also fixed upstream.
