Bug Description

I have an old computer with an ATi Radeon 9600 XT on it.

If I boot up with the Ubuntu 8.04.2 LTS LiveDVD everything works just fine.

But if I try to boot with the 8.10 or 9.04 my computer would freeze when starting the X Server. Actually, the X Server doesn't even start. I see the boot logo till it loads completely but after that step it is supposed to get me to the login screen. The problem is that My monitor goes to standby (maybe it can't find display modes) and I have to reset my computer.

I installed 8.04.2 and made an incremental dist-upgrade to Jaunty, but the same issue is present. I did not install FGLRX because my card is not supported any more.

My temporary sollution is to boot into my 9.04 installation using the 8.04 kernel from the GRUB menu.

Maybe someone can help me find a fix for this issue as I could't find on the internet yet and maybe this fix will get intergrated in 9.10

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug is similar to what you are experiencing https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/348332 but I don't want to mark it as a duplicate in case I am wrong.

My problem is not like the bug #348332.

I cannot boot my ubuntu machine, unlike the others which have freezes once in a while,

I also tried other distributions (Mandriva 2009.1, Fedora 11, Sabayon 4.1) but the same problem with the X.Org Server occurred.

I can see the boot splash finish it's boot sequence but when it is supposed to take me to the login screen I am presented with a black monitor. I tried to boot with "VGA=VESA" but it's the same. But if i boot a LiveCD of Jaunty with safe graphics mode it boots and is usable. After I install it, it's not anymore. Now I supposed it was a kernel issue and I upgraded to the kernel 2.6.30 but I had the same problem. Now I don't know what to do anymore because I have to boot with the Hardy kernel in order to boot my machine. I tried Intrepid and it's the same. I don't really want fancy effects on my machine. I only want to have my resolutions available and to have EXT4.

It would be great if this would be solved in Karmic.

If I can help, please post here how.

Hi silvery-corgan,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log (and maybe Xorg.0.log.old) file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

[This is an automated message. Apologies if it has reached you inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

Do you have an AGP system? If so, does it help if you try some different AGPMode values? (1,2,4,8)
Please check https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Quirks#ATI%20AGP%20Mode%20Quirk and report back if it helps.

Also, if you can, please check if you can reproduce this on Ubuntu Karmic. LiveCD's of the alpha-3 release are available from http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/

I do have an AGP system. My video card is AGP.

I have tried different AGPMode values from 1 to 8 but with no luck.

I'll have a look at Karmic Alpha 3 a little later.

Another feedback.

Karmic Beta doesn't work. I am hoping that the RC will.

To my surprise, I had booted up Sabayon 5.0 KDE and it worked. I also tried Kubuntu Karmin Beta and it didn't work.

I have returned to report that Karmic works flawlessly on my machine now. I did a full install, updated to the latest packages and everything seems to be fine. The only problem left is that there is no 3D Acceleration. So no Compiz Eye-Candy. Maybe someone could help me here, because I know that Karmic does not have an xorg.conf anymore.

You don't understand. The system doesn't start the graphical server at all. It just freezes. Not even CTRL+1 or CTRL+ALT+DEL doesn't work. This affects me in BETA 2.

I have tested Lucid RC and it seems to work just fine. I mean ... everything works ... even compiz (wow). I haven't had compiz since 6.06 on this computer. I've also ran the command you mentioned to grab some debug results. I hope this won't be broken in the final. The RC just works.
