I also have the same problem on my HP Compaq 6715b with Jaunty AMD64.
Screen flickers very often.
I already deactivated compiz. It got a little better, but not much.

I uninstalled fglrx following the instructions https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/FglrxInteferesWithRadeonDriver but it didn't help
