Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

I used Intrepid with Radeon driver on Toshiba A210 (ATI RS690M [Radeon X1200 Series]) and from time to time had a flickering (with fglrx there was the same problem). Now on Jaunty it was ok (but the card worked slowly) before the update to 1:6.11.0-1ubuntu1 this morning. Now I have the horrible flickering all the time (and the work is very slow too). I tried to reconfigure X but it didn't help (the problem remains).
Thanks for help!

Hi!

I also have the flickering problem. I am running Ubuntu jaunty AMD64 with an RS690G. Driver version is 6.11.0

I actually have two different kinds of flickering. The more annoying is that sometimes the screen goes black for a moment, and returns after that. xrandr offers two refresh rates for my DVI display (60.3*+ Hz and 59.9Hz, but I cannot switch to 59.9), and the display could be a little picky about the refresh rate.

The other flickering only concerns the mouse pointer, and only if I move it to certain positions on the X axis.

Attached is my X server log.

Martin

please attach your log directly rather than zipping it next time. In your case the xserver has selected a clone mode for your HMDI monitor that matches your VGA port. the digital display may not like the timing. since the monitors are cloned, you'll have to select a different crtc to drive them at different timings. xrandr would ideally be smart enough to do this itself.

if you want the native mode:
xrandr --output HDMI-0 --crtc 1 --mode 1680x1050
or if you want 1280x1024:
xrandr --output HDMI-0 --crtc 1 --mode 1280x1024 --rate 59.9

Also running jaunty (AMD64). I added my comment to the upstream bug: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=20222#c2 . I also looked for remains of any fglrx installation, but found none.

Hi!

I do not use clone mode, but dual-head (DVI display on the left, VGA display on the right). I actually was able to switch to the 59.9Hz modeline using "xrandr --output HDMI-0 --mode 0x5d" (From the list that "xrandr --verbose" prints), but the flickering stays. The flickering only affects the DVI display, the VGA display stays stable all the time.

Also note that the display is not connected via HDMI, but DVI (only xrandr calls it HDMI-0, although the board has a HDMI connector, too).

Sorry for gzipping the log, I just intended to save space.

For some time, I used the fglrx driver, which does not exhibit the flickering.

I'd like to test some newer version of the driver. If I check it out and install it, it goes to /usr/local. How do I tell the X server to look there instead of /usr?

Ciao

I just installed the git head version using the instructions from http://www.x.org/wiki/radeon. The flickering got much worse, it is now actually constantly black, and my screen just says "Frequency out of range 65kHz/60Hz, please adjust to 1680x1050 with 60Hz".

From time to time, my desktop comes through for a blink of an eye, and I can see snow (just like overclocked or bad video RAM).

Hi Radek!

It's not a notebook, but a desktop. This bug report is not about X.Org crashing, but about a flickering screen on DVI/LVDS-connected displays. If your X server does no longer work after moving to jaunty, it is probably because you still have the fglrx driver configured (which no longer supports RS690 since driver version 9.4). Switching from fglrx to radeon/radeonhd should be documented on the Ubuntu forums or the wiki.

It looks like two different symptoms, which _might_ be two different bugs:

1. My bug, which seems to be Bug #310864: Flickering on DVI-connected displays, which sometimes gets worse at higher CPU load. With "flickering", I mean the DVI screen actually going blank for guessed 100-300ms. I experience it on the desktop chipset (some people on plug-in graphics cards), even with -ati GIT head.

2. The Bug #351291 Jens mentioned: Flickering under low CPU load. I read the comments, and everybody there seems to have the problem on the mobile chipset (RS690M).

ATI X1250 Flickering Bug for Jaunty

I am using HP6715B which have a ATI X1250 video card. Which I was using Intrepid 8.10 AMD64 which worked fine with restricted drivers. Then I tried Jaunty AMD64 as soon as it released which caused me a nightmare of flickering. Installing gdesklets made my flicker unbearable. I tried all the trip and trick in the world which caused me to reinstall Jaunty several times. The fact is I love Jaunty which I don't want to give up.

After I followed many techniques of internet the out come was confusing and exhausting. But all the knowledge which I gone through this painful experience came up with pleasing simple steps worked for me.

This is how you do

Before everything
1.backup your data
2.make sure you connect internet through RJ45 cable. Because in case of GUI failure your wireless will not work. And would not be easy to fix the GUI.

Then,
3.Open the terminal window (Application → Accessories → Terminal)
4.Back up your xorg.conf file for future crisis
sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak
5.Edit xorg.conf file
sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Delete everything in between Section “Device” and EndSection
Section "Device"
xxxxxxxxxx “xxxxxxx”
EndSection
Add the line which look like as follows
  Section "Device"
    Identifier "radeonhd"
  EndSection
6.Save the file and exit geditor
7.remove all existing ati driver. In terminal fire the following command.
sudo apt-get purge xserver-xorg-video-radeon xserver-xorg-video-ati
exit the terminal window
8.Open Synaptic Package Manager and search “ati” and scroll and install the following package
xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd 1.2.4-2
9.Reboot the system

joy oh joy that how you do it

if your GUI crashed after this follow the steps below to restore:
log into text mode
1.restore your xorg.conf which we back up before
sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak /etc/X11/xorg.conf
2.install the default ati drivers
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-radeon xserver-xorg-video-ati

Following the instructions here I've downloaded and installed https://launchpad.net/~tormodvolden/+archive/ppa/+files/xserver-xorg-video-radeon_6.12.99+git20090911.ac853ca0-0ubuntu0tormod_i386.deb. Unfortunately the file /usr/share/xserver-xorg/pci/radeon.ids appears to be missing from the package. When X starts it is unable to identify the card as a radeon and the fallback VESA driver fails on this machine too.

Should the list of PCI ids be included in this package or is there another I can find them in?

Ian, this is possible, but you can work around it by making a minimal xorg.conf where you specify the "ati" driver.

What Jens said :) I provide the packages as-is and they are sometimes hardly tested.

Hi Bryce!

Actually, I still have my HP Compaq 6715b with the Radeon X1250 card

On karmic it worked well, now on lucid it also works acceptable, but with small problems:
- Before the GDM login, garbage becomes visible on the screen (This garbage then fades to the gdm login background)
- Once I used fast user switching two times in a short period of time. After the second time, the screen started to flicker. Changing the resolution didn't help. When I wanted to logout (so I could go to the other profile to save the data and reboot) the screen became blank, and i had to use the power switch to shutdown the machine. After the reboot everything was back to normal.

So I'm not sure if this is actually the same bug, maybe you can provide directions (I'm also not sure if this bug is easily reproducible)

Hi Martin Wimmer,

Similar problems here. MSI K9AG Neo2-Digital with RS690 running Lucid. I've seen the screen flickering on startup, when starting an application and my brother saw it the screen going blank and had to reset the computer.

If there is no workaround for this I'm going to have to put another videocard in that box.

I had posted this at Launchpad #331522 already but it might be a good idea to have it here as well.

I've installed Ubuntu 10.04 on an MSI K9AG Neo2-Digital with 690G chipset and the screen flickers here as well. I can't really describe it well, it feels like the vsync gets lost or something. The display (Iiyama E430) is connected using VGA.

I've seen it happening on startup and when starting an application, will test some more soon.

dmesg info and xorg.log

dmesg output and Xorg.log with all default stuff in the attachment. With that I get the flickering.

I've taken another look and it's more like the screen flickers between black and normal display when it flickers. No vsync thing as I mentioned earlier.

I've added radeon.modeset=0 and it looks like this has removed the flickering entirely, so I'm happy (I don't really need KMS on that box).

The radeonhd driver (from Ubuntu 10.04 lucid repositories, same place where I got radeon) also flickers, but a lot less.

Can you attach the xorg log with kms disabled? Can you also attach a register dump from kms and ums as root? Use avivotool, available here:
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/~airlied/radeontool/
I believe ubuntu packages it as well.

boot ums (radeon.modeset=0):
avivotool regs all > ums.regs
boot kms:
avivotool regs all > kms.regs
and attach the files here.

Xorg log using UMS

In the attachment you find the Xorg.log when using UMS.

I cannot give you the register dumps. When I enter that command from a gnome-terminal the system freezes and the screen shows some strange purple stuff. When I enter that command at tty1 the system freezes and the screen goes black. After restarting the computer I find out no file has been written (or a 0 byte file which is no use).

Hi Martin Wimmer,

What appears to have worked for me is to start with "radeon.modeset=0". This disables KMS. Run sudo gedit /etc/default/grub and add it after quiet splash. (so make it "quiet splash radeon.modeset=0"). Then run sudo update-grub.
