I am on a Dell Inspiron 5100 with the Radeon Mobility M7 [7500]. I have tried several of the suggestions listed to no avail. I get a black picture immediately upon starting xorg if the driver is set to ati. Having no xorg.conf, trying the various MonitorLayout Options, etc and all I get is the same black screen.
The xrandr commands all issue errors about the server refusing connection to screen 0.
