Can you report this upstream? https://bugs.freedesktop.org/enter_bug.cgi Add your Xorg.0.log from without xorg.conf.

Timo, David's log has:
(II) RADEON(0): Output VGA-0 disconnected
(II) RADEON(0): Output LVDS connected
(II) RADEON(0): Output S-video disconnected
(II) RADEON(0): Output LVDS using initial mode 1024x768

Does that mean it sees the connected built-in screen? But fails to drive it correctly?
