please try the latest driver (only x86 binary available):

http://users.tkk.fi/~tjaalton/dpkg/ati

also, run "dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg" to get a clean xorg.conf. It doesn't generate a Modules-section anymore, and that could help here.
