I've also had frequent lock ups with Gusty and Feisty with ati x600 using both the open ati driver and fglrx. I can confirm that it's not related to compiz, though obviously compiz does seem to aggravate the problem. (I've completely removed all compiz related packages from my system). As mentioned above, I also find Neverball can lock it up. However, I've also had lock ups with simpler games like Solarwolf which doesn't use 3d acceleration (Or I assume not, since it's just a 2d arcade-style game.)
 Earlier with Dapper+Beryl+fglrx+Xgl, I had no problems.
