Using Gutsy on a Radeon 9700 I get the same behavor. X hangs when Compiz is enabled and I have to reset the machine. Also X hangs sometimes even when I'm not using Compiz at all.
Booting the Gutsy Live CD I get the same. When Gnome is starting, it gets hanged when Compiz is started leaving me with a black screen and a cursor that I can move but nothing more. Also the CD stops spinning.
Using the Beta Live CD (Gutsy) I can start GNOME and I have compiz working.
