It can be or not.
In any case, disabling desktop effects makes ubuntu work for weeks without any problem.
enabling them it freezes in 20 minutes.
the bug can be in compiz, in ati or invidia driver, in xorg or wherever... what is certain for me is that it shows itself only when visual effects are on.
Furthermore, I have the feeling that this is connected to the bug related to the to the ati proprietary driver too.. for every boost in the video property tends to freeze the system. It is like there is a bad interface between video drivers and rest of the system. (and if the video driver is not working properly compiz can not work as well).. but I am only guessing..
