I'm getting the same problem, but i don't have compiz or ati. It won't _let_ me use compiz, even though it was working in feisty.
Symptoms are the bad ones: Everything freezes for no apparent reason, with no apparent regularity and with no warning. Mouse doesn't work, neither does ctrl+alt+backspace. I left it frozen for 2+ hours once just to check if it would start back up on its own, but no such luck.
My Setup:
Some HP from January.
Intel Core2duo
Intel Integrated graphics (Intel Corporation 82G965 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02) )
Software:
Like i said, no compiz.
Everything installed from repositories. The only config that i've done that i could even imagine having this effect is that when i installed imwheel i touched xorg.conf, but nothing visual, just the mouse stuff. I followed the instructions on this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=388161
