I'm glad to hear that you're having better luck with the proprietary ATI drivers, but this doesn't constitute a bug fix. The problem is know to exist specifically in the free xserver-xorg-video-ati driver. Like Nicolas mentioned, it would probably be helpful to post feedback on the freedesktop.org bugzilla:
