Never mind. I had two random within-an-hour freezes today with the latest Compiz running. In one freeze I could move the pointer, in the other I couldn't. ssh'ing in from another machine, both times CPU was at ~0% and backtraces (gotten by attaching gdb to compiz) looked like it didn't happen in Compiz.
That one time earlier this week, same version of compiz ran for almost 2 days without any crashes. I guess I was just lucky.
