I have a similar problem on Ubuntu 6.06 (and Xsane 0.97-4ubuntu6, kernel 2.6.15-26-386) with a Canon CanoScan N676U:
The preview-scan works normally. The grinding noise occures when the scanner lamp reaches the end of the the selected scan-area (when it should move back to its starting position). I can just stop it by disconnecting the cable.
Sometimes the bug doesn't occur - but I can't ay why, I'm not aware of doing something differently...
