Ok. I downgraded xlibs to 4.3.0.dfsg.1-4 and Alt-Tab works fine.

Hi,
It's a xlibs bug with modifiers, downgrading xlibs to dfsg.1-4 is a good
workaround for the moment.

What has happened here is that mod1 is now associated with keycode
<ALT> (a key which does not appear to exist on a PC keyboard) instead
of keysyms Alt_L and Alt_R.
Magic elsewhere in the keymap causes Alt_L and Alt_R to still generate
modifier state 1 - but that's not enough. Here's what KDE wants to do:
KeyPress mod1-TAB: display the window selection widget, and shift to
KeyRelease mod1: remove the window selection widget, raise the
Here's what they actually see:
KeyPress Alt_L: (no binding, ignored)
KeyPress mod1-TAB: <...>
KeyRelease mod1-TAB: (no binding, ignored)
KeyRelease Alt_L: (no binding, ignored)
Since Alt_L is not part of mod1 (it just happens to coincidentally
generate it inside XKB).
I'm not really sure what the right fix to this is, because I don't
understand why the change was made in the first place. Absent a better
explanation, I'd back out this change:
- modifier_map Mod1 { Alt_L, Alt_R };
Restoring that line should fix the problem.

thanks
This message is in regard to the bug reported in #254973, #255063,
#255192, #255216, #255332, #255778, #256192, and probably several other
duplicates that haven't been identified yet.
A fix for this problem is available. It comes in the form of a diff to
/etc/X11/
To apply this fix:
1) Retrieve the patch from
<URL: http://
attachment to this mail.
2) Save the patch someplace. I recommend /tmp.
3) Become root.
4) cd /
5) patch -p0 < /tmp/alt_
6) Go back to being a mere mortal user.
7) Restart your X session. Advanced users may simply reload their
keymap using setxkbmap(1x) with the proper arguments.
This patch is from upstream CVS, but not license-encumbered (revision
1.10 of the file in question was made on 2003-08-22, which predates the
relicensing by several months). (For simplicity, this patch also
contains revision 1.9, an unrelated but harmless change. Yes, it really
is harmless; I tried it.)
I will be applying this fix to the SVN trunk before long; as the package
release manager, it's Fabio's decision as to whether it makes it into -6
or not.
Thanks to the patient for their patience. I apologize for the
inconvenience.

Downgrading metacity didn't work for me, but downgrading xlibs
to 4.3.0.dfsg.1-4 did. This bug should be reassigned, I think,
but I don't know whether I can (and if I can - how to) do it.

Figured out the cause of the problem, if not the "right"
solution. It's this change (-4 to -5):

// definition for the PC-AT type 101 key keyboard
- modifier_map Mod1 { Alt_L, Alt_R };
Restoring that line should fix the problem.

This bug is a xlibs bug, it has been reported several times and will be
fixed soon.
Here it is a fix from xfree's maintainer:
"A fix for this problem is available. It comes in the form of a diff
to=20
/etc/X11/
To apply this fix:
1) Retrieve the patch from
<URL: http://
attachment to this mail.
2) Save the patch someplace. I recommend /tmp.
3) Become root.
4) cd /
5) patch -p0 < /tmp/alt_
6) Go back to being a mere mortal user.
7) Restart your X session. Advanced users may simply reload their
keymap using setxkbmap(1x) with the proper arguments."

You're quite right; the problem is indeed XFree86's. It has already
been reported quite some times, and an updated release are pending
upload. I just merged your bug report with these (with the nonsense
commands near the top of this email - just ignore them), so you will
probably receive an email when the fixed package is uploaded.
In the interim, you may downgrade the "xlibs" package to the version
found in "testing" (4.3.0.dfsg.1-4), and it should be all back to
normal.

This is a duplicate of many other bugs.
A workaround for the problem is documented in the logs of most or all of

* Grab from XFree86 CVS (2003-08-22) a fix for the problem some window
managers have seeing Alt key release events (commonly known as the
"Alt-Tab problem"). (Closes: #254973)
half a problem still unresolved. when pressing alt-tab:
* mouse doubleclicks will "stack up" and will be executed only after
keyrelease event
* cant move/close windows until keyrelease event
downgrading xlibs to xlibs_4.

First I've heard of *this* problem...
Are we sure this isn't a window manager bug?

Hello.

Downgrading metacity didn't work for me, but downgrading xlibs
to 4.3.0.dfsg.1-4 did. This bug should be reassigned, I think,
but I don't know whether I can (and if I can - how to) do it.
