Subject: capplets: Alt-Tab no longer working properly (Alt "sticking"?)

Package: capplets
Version: 1:2.6.1-8
Severity: normal

Upgraded my home workstation today, after crossing my fingers. But no
joy...got the same results as I've gotten on two other machines after
recent upgrades. Alt-Tabbing in GNOME no longer works "properly"...I
can alt-tab and see the popup to select my new window, but when I
release the keys, the popup stays in place, the window outline for the
new window stays highlighted, but the focus doesn't switch.

Almost seems like Alt is "sticking" or something...when I
Ctrl-Atl-Left for next desktop, I release the keys at new desktop, but
something sticks. The workspace popup still shows up, and pressing the
Left or Right keys by themselves continues to move me between
workspaces. Re-pressing/releasing Ctrl does nothing, but pressing Alt
again drops the workspace popup.

This may be the wrong package to report against...sorry if it is. I've
looked around both for the correct package, and/or for a similar bug,
and found nothing. Thanks!

Hi,

That's a xlibs bug, already reported:
#254973, #255063, #255192, #255216, #255332, #255778, #256192, #256594,
#256596, #256706, #256875, #256939, #257044, #257305, #257454

Here it is a fix from xfree's maintainer:

"A fix for this problem is available. It comes in the form of a diff to
/etc/X11/xkb/symbols/pc/pc.

To apply this fix:

1) Retrieve the patch from
   <URL: http://redwald.deadbeast.net/tmp/alt_tab_fix.diff > or the
   attachment to this mail.
2) Save the patch someplace. I recommend /tmp.
3) Become root.
4) cd /
5) patch -p0 < /tmp/alt_tab_fix.diff
6) Go back to being a mere mortal user.
7) Restart your X session. Advanced users may simply reload their
keymap using setxkbmap(1x) with the proper arguments."

Cheers,

Sebastien Bacher

Ah. Didn't think to look in gnome-control-center...sorry. Should have
poked about through the dependencies more. This appears to be the same
as 255283 (though hard to say for sure, since it has no description
other than the subject *grin*).

Thanks a lot! Sorry for not finding that...I got GNOME stuck in my head,
so I never considered looking into xlibs, etc. Should have known better.
Thanks again for the quick reply...this makes my laptop usable again
(OK...I know. It shouldn't bother me THAT much. But it's been driving me
crazy! *grin*)

Take care,

You're quite right; the problem is indeed XFree86's. It has already
been reported quite some times, and an updated release are pending
upload. I just merged your bug report with these (with the nonsense
commands near the top of this email - just ignore them), so you will
probably receive an email when the fixed package is uploaded.

In the interim, you may downgrade the "xlibs" package to the version
found in "testing" (4.3.0.dfsg.1-4), and it should be all back to
 normal.

Not a metacity issue; reported plenty of times already; known workarounds in
the BTS.

This is a duplicate of many other bugs.

A workaround for the problem is documented in the logs of most or all of
them.

The bug is in xlibs (XKB data), not the XFree86 X server or its keyboard
driver.

We expect the bug to be fixed in the next release.
