'sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phighxserver-xorg'
does *not* solve the problem for me.

As stated above, the problem (for me) seems to be related to using the nvidia driver. If I use nv then I don't get the black screen, and I can switch (and view) the terminals via ctrl+alt+F1 etc.
