The answer I got at freedesktop's bugzilla:
"Failed to get EDID from monitor, and closed driver.
Your VGA cable is probably broken. But if it's not, there's not much we can do
about it."
Unfortunately there's not much that can be done. I would try to replace the VGA cable.
