Bug Description

Binary package hint: nvidia-glx-new

I have just installed the new ubuntu version 8.04 (not alpha or beta). I have a gigabyte mothercard GA-M61PM-S2 with an integrated video card : nVidia GeForce 6100 nForce 430 (rev a2) 00:0d.0.

lsb_release -rd :
Description: Ubuntu 8.04
Release: 8.04

After having installed the system, it seems that xorg is running with nv drivers. But available resolution are 320x240, 400x300, 640x480 and 800x600.

So, I choosed to install the nvidia-glx-new package using gui. I rebooted the system. And then, available resolution are 320x240 and 640x480 only. 3D acceleration work fine (3D effects are present), but resolution is too low.

In attachement, I put a file with :
- xorg.log when using nv driver
- xorg.log when using nvidia driver
- xorg.conf when using nvidia driver

I tried a GeForce 7300 card, but I haved the same symptom.

Thank you for your report. However, I think it's not because of your graphics card, but because of your monitor.
The current version of X in Hardy(7.3) automatically detects which resolutions are good for the monitor and graphics card. But some monitors aren't supported.
Could you please try again with another monitor and post the name/type of your current monitor? Please also attach /var/log/Xorg.0.log
Thanks in advance.

You thank right. I changed my monitor with an Hanns-G HG216D and I am currently using 1680x1050 mode. I have about twenty mode available.

I joined my currently Xorg.0.log.

The monitor which was not working is : LDLC 19" LCD - Multimédia LM19T. It is a monitor sold by a french multimedia shop on internet, but the model is no more available for sell on the internet site.

This bug can be confirmed, I'm going to forward it upstream to the bug tracker of freedesktop, the project that is responsible for this.
Thank you again for reporting this.

Oups, today I started my system with the hans monitor, and I got the resolution problem.

I am in 640x380 with the Hanns-G HG216D monitor. I tried to reboot but without effects.

I have a nvidia geforce 6150 card with a Philips 14.1' LCD. Hardy boots perfectly with the nv driver into 1280x800. But after I reboot, it falls back to 640x480. I tried dpkg-reconfigure xorg/nvidia-glx-new and also manually tried to do a nvidia-xconfig.

I have also tried to remove nvidia-glx-new package and compiled the binary nvidia driver. It worked fine, but once I rebooted, I faced the same problem.

I am also facing freezes with compiz turned on.

If you require any specific information/log, I would be glad to provide.

Thanks.

I have a new install of Mythbuntu 8.04 (original release) and the monitor is sometimes detected and sometimes not (in which case I get this low-resolution problem). This is new hardware (AMD, ASUS MB, ASUS 6200). The same version of Mythbuntu and the same display worked perfectly with my 2.4GHz P4 using an EVGA 6200.

There is something more going on here than just xorg and the monitor.

The answer I got at freedesktop's bugzilla:
"Failed to get EDID from monitor, and closed driver.

Your VGA cable is probably broken. But if it's not, there's not much we can do
about it."

Unfortunately there's not much that can be done. I would try to replace the VGA cable.
