I'm having the exact same problem on a desktop computer. I have in it a radeon x700 gfx card and I can't seem to get any resolution over 1024x768. I have tried to change the monitors horizsync and vertrefresh (since they seem to be slightly different from distro to distro) as well as adding the resolutions to xorg.conf. 1280x1024, 1280x960 work in MS Windows ;-/
The monitor is a medion 17 inch FH (4:3).
I tried both the binary blog driver from ATI as well as the free driver. I hope this helps.
