In response to Ben Lin, I was under the impression that the 64 bit version of ubuntu was called amd64 only because amd had 64 bit CPU's on the market before intel and it was named at that time. That being said, I am not an expert and I too am running the amd64 version on an intel CPU, so there may be something to it. If I get time, I might try to install the 32 bit version and see if I still experience this problem.
