I can confirm this as I am seeing the exact same thing (though I am using Ext4 and ecrypted home).

Same problem after renaming my .KDE directory too.

Removed Akonadi (I use Thunderbird), but see the same issue after a reboot.

I noticed that if I kill the window manager, I can get the desktop to respond again (sans window manager) and fire off apps like Firefox here. The second I try "kwin --replace" or "compiz --replace", the desktop freezes again (until I go to a console and kill the window manager).

I'm running the 64-bit flavor of 9.04a4 with all updates as of this minute.
