I am french, I use the "Français (variante)" keymap because I like how the keys are arranged (², ³, œ, etc).
I also am left-handed and use Ctrl-Up and Ctrl-Down to switch desktops. I do so by using RCtrl + arrows, keeping my left hand on the mouse.
Now, on Ubuntu 14.04, I am also suffering from this weird "level5" thing. For some reason I don't really understand, I should now use both hands to change desktops (I replaced Ctrl-Alt-Up/Down with Ctrl-Up/Down with to not use both hands, as you understood).
By the way, as stated in a previous comment, RCtrl is a very important key on VirtualBox...
