And that fixed the problem (didn't even notice composite was on, it probably doesn't help things in a computer this old)
I have version "2:1.1.1-1ubuntu4" of libx11-6 and libx11-data, version 2:1.7.4-0ubuntu5 of xserver-xorg-video-i810, and version 1:7.2-5ubuntu13 of xorg package
@Bryce
Had the same problem on a new (although updated) install of xubuntu gusty, added the following to my xorg.conf:
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Disable"
EndSection
Section "ServerFlags"
Option "AIGLX" "off"
EndSection
And that fixed the problem (didn't even notice composite was on, it probably doesn't help things in a computer this old)
