Bug Description

Ubuntu 9.04
I report this with great humility and trepidation because I'm not at all sure it's a bug. Jaunty either doesn't have wvdial, or the package is broken. I've set up wvdial several times on several different PC's over the last few years, so have some familiarity. Never tried in Jaunty til now.

Here's my old "Dial-up" thread. It's been read over 5000 times.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=480717

Anyway, I tried to configure wvdial in Jaunty for the first time two days ago.

bpbar@bpbar-laptop:~$ sudo wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf
[sudo] password for bpbar:
sudo: wvdialconf: command not found
bpbar@bpbar-laptop:~$

A day later I decided to download gnome-ppp. After the package installed "sudo wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf" command worked. I thought that wvdial had been tossed intentionally but some people suggested filing a bug report so here I am.

Thanks very much for reporting the bug!

wvdial should be automatically be in jaunty. It is up and working on my laptop. You don't really need gnome-ppp ( I don't actually have it installed).

Next time it happens, try and see if you have wvdial installed by typing in the terminal:

sudo apt-get instal wvdial

One question: was your installation a clean one or did you upgrade from previous version of Ubuntu?

affects: ubuntu → wvdial (Ubuntu)

Hi, feranick -
The installation was clean. I've heard of people having troubles after upgrading, and I'm on freakin dial-up at home, so in the habit of going some place with the laptop where there's broadband and downloading the entire .iso. Then it's back home to burn the CD and install manually, formatting / but not /home. I've got a test PC and some spare HDD's in the shop. Will do some checking and report back.

I just realized - there's probably no point in installing Jaunty to more HDD's from the same CD that didn't produce wvdial in the first place, is there?

I had Mint Gloria running on the test PC. Downloaded the Gloria .iso 3 or 4 days ago. It's based on Jaunty, correct? Here's the output:

patti@patti-desktop ~ $ sudo wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf
[sudo] password for patti:
sudo: wvdialconf: command not found
patti@patti-desktop ~ $ sudo apt-get install wvdial

The PC wasn't connected to the internet (*$&#@!! dial-up) so I didn't bother going any further.

I also had Qimo (a kid's desktop based on Xubuntu) installed to another spare HDD, so swapped drives and fired up Qimo, then logged out of the kid's desktop and into the "adult" Xubuntu desktop. The wvdialconf command worked fine. wvdial leapt into action, looking for a modem.
