I tried with OpenJDK 8, too, same result.

$ java -version
openjdk version "1.8.0_91"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_91-8u91-b14-0ubuntu4~16.04.1-b14)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.91-b14, mixed mode)

However, looking at bug #1597769, the JAR packages provided in the Github repository version 3.0.1, version 3.1 and version 3.1.1 do work with OpenJDK 8, so upgrading would be a solution for this bug.
