I had the same problem, with generally similar solution:
(video: ATI Radeon Mobility X300)

./ati-driver-installer-9.2-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/jaunty
dpkg -i *.deb
aticonfig --initial -f
#reboot
