Bug Description

I updated my Ubuntu to the latest jaunty Alpha 6. On reboot, after the new progress completes, my screen flashes a couple of times and all I get after that is a messed up screen with a blurry text saying something like "Asus". It just hangs there.

Let me know what information I can provide and I can try to connect an ethernet cable and get that from the recovery mode. BTW I hope I got the package right.

Thanks,
~Apoorva

Just recovered my computer from the same problem. The bug is NOT in the usplash package. it's the AMD ATI driver called fglrx. Instead you should use for the moment the opensource driver. The following is a howto:

1. get into recovery mode (when grub loads, press ESC, select recovery mode)
2. choose to get NETROOT from the menu
3. sudo apt-get remove --purge xorg-driver-fglrx
4. sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-ati
4. sudo reboot

Thanks Michael. This worked.

I had the same problem, with generally similar solution:
(video: ATI Radeon Mobility X300)

./ati-driver-installer-9.2-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/jaunty
dpkg -i *.deb
aticonfig --initial -f
#reboot

Thanks for finger-pointing the package

I have the same kind of problem, but only with multihead setup! As in, with 8.600 driver I can use everything with a cloned desktop.

Specs:
 - AMD Phenom II X4
 - 64-bit Ubuntu intrepid beta (updated < 30min ago)
 - ATI HD 4650 based graphics card

The multihead configuration was created with "aticonfig --initial --screen-layout=right".

Same problem with ubuntu's v8.600 and with official fglrx v8.602 (catalyst 9.4). Jaunty RC. Video card 4870x2.
Need recovery mode : apt-get remove fglrx* and reboot.

fglrx only works with old versions of Ubuntu because AMD hasn't released any version of it that works with xserver 1.6
This issue is tracked bug 313027:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/313027

As suggested earlier in this bug, it's recommended that you use the open source -ati driver instead.

Are the bugs (this and the duplicates of this bug) that occured during an upgrade to jaunty duplicates of bug #285603? Or should we keep them separate?

Ok, was able to fix it.

I believe what Martin wrote a couple of posts above is correct, but only for cards that are no longer supported. To find out if your card is supported, go to the ATI site (http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html) and try to find a driver for your card. If the driver offered is the 9.4 version, then the proprietary driver should work for your card.

However, after upgrading to Jaunty I was experiencing the same problem described in this issue. To cut a long story short, it turns out that my xorg.conf (working fine with the proprietary driver on Intrepid) was no good for this new version.

Everything works ok now, after regenerating xorg.conf with the command below, and rebooting.

/usr/bin/aticonfig -initial

Hi,

With Jaunty 9.04, no possible to activate Catalyst 9.4 without system problems...

It will be better to have quicker new Linux Catalyst, with complete Catalyst Control Center as Windos Catalyst...

Hope to have quick informations about that from ATI...

Hi,
I've upgrade to Jaunty my HP EliteBook 8530p with an ATI HD3650 and there is no way to use the fglrx driver provided by Catalyst 9.4 **AND** 9.5.
I've already fired the following bugs to ATI:

http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1550
http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1568

now with the 9.5 I can grab the kernel message and I can safely reboot the machine. See the dmesg attached for the kernel messages.

I've tryed with the following kernel:
2.6.28-11 and -12 from Jaunty
2.6.27-11 from Hardy

same result.

Since with 8.10 the flgrx worked like a charm and was very stable (with Kernel 2.6.27-11), I suppose that the main problem is the incompatibility with Xorg 1.6.

It should be nice to have a backport of Xorg 1.5.x to Jaunty :-)

I've already tryed to install a recompiled Xorg 1.5 from http://www.kdedevelopers.org/node/3942 but it did not worked.

Now I'm using the radeonhd driver (version 1.2.5 from PPA and latest DRM from git) but it is missing 3D acceleration.

The support from ATI is not so responsive.

Which is the Fix Released?

I've resolved with aticonfig --acpi-services=off as you can read here:

Thanks,
Luca

aticonfig --acpi-services=off doesn't fix the problem with 9.4 or 9.5 (4870x2, jaunty 64) but catalyst 9.6 are working without any tricks for me.

Which version of fglrx? The one in the Jaunty repository (package version
should be 8.6002 I suppose) or the last one from the ATI site, i.e. Catalyst
9.6 which should get you after the build process these packages:

fglrx-amdcccle_8.620-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb
fglrx-kernel-source_8.620-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb
fglrx-modaliases_8.620-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb
xorg-driver-fglrx_8.620-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb
xorg-driver-fglrx-dev_8.620-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb

Ciao,
Luca

I had catalyst version 9.5 from the ATI site. I had to download and compile it because the fglrx from the repository was not up to date when Jaunty was released. After the update that installed kernel 2.6.28-13 I lost video. I tried to use the previous fix, removing fglrx and installing the open source driver, but this did not fix the situation this time.
