I chmod the permissions on /var/lib/dpkg to rwxrwxrwx and was able to use
the updater. However, I forgot to make a note of the original permissions on
dpkg.

Everything seems to be working great, now. If you could, would you please
send me what the default permissions for dpkg should be?

I'm sorry that I took this long to follow up on this bug.

PS. I am not using selinux or anything like it; the output of ls -l on
status is as follows:
