update-manager throws exception rather than running

Binary package hint: update-manager

I am using Ubuntu 9.10 - the Karmic Koala.

When I attempt to run update-manager the following message is displayed:

"Could not initialize the package information

An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:

'E:Could not open file /var/lib/dpkg/status - open (13: Permission denied), E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'"

Can you please attach the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade ? This will help us diagnose the problem.

Can you also please run:
$ ls -l /var/lib/dpkg/status ?

Do you use anything special like selinux?

I chmod the permissions on /var/lib/dpkg to rwxrwxrwx and was able to use
the updater. However, I forgot to make a note of the original permissions on
dpkg.

Everything seems to be working great, now. If you could, would you please
send me what the default permissions for dpkg should be?

I'm sorry that I took this long to follow up on this bug.

PS. I am not using selinux or anything like it; the output of ls -l on
status is as follows:

@mike: The default permissions on my computers for /var/lib/dpkg were drwxr-xr-x and for /var/lib/dpkg/status it's -rw-r--r--. Can you still reproduce this problem? If not, we will close this bug because of the lack of the information required to reproduce.
