Before using update-manager I tried "manually" prepare upgrade in synaptic. My results after using smart upgrade:
1. ubuntu-desktop is selected for removal due to problems with alacarte/smeg dependencies.
2. selecting ubuntu-desktop manually selects alacarte (and hplip) and marks smeg to be removed.
I haven't tried actual upgrade (yet).
