IanWilson are you using opensource Nouveau or closed binary Nvidia Driver?

Do you also happen to have a older ubuntu precise iso image laying around with an older compiz version which did work?

Can you also confirm on a other desktop environment/session on the same system like "lxde" or something else like "gnome-shell" /"gnome-session-fallback" that doesn't use compiz?
