Ok.
Step 1. Install Ubuntu and expect it to somewhat work.
Step 2. Go through an upgrade to the latest version.
Step 3. Restart machine.
Step 4. Login.
Step 5. Wait until someone pushes a massively untested change. (I.e. Like
when the kernel decided every storage device should be /dev/sdx even if
they were /dev/hdx and the Ubuntu team didn't test and run any scripts to
update it.)
Step 6. Apt-get upgrade to that massively untested version.
Step 7. Restart computer.
Step 8. Log in.
Step 9. No desktop shows up, only a background.

The issue seems to be in upstart. It appears that whatever is calling it tries to call upstart-udev-bridge which cannot connect to /com/ubuntu/upstart and so no desktop is displayed. Removing upstart solves it but is a bad fix because unity still requires upstart for some silly reason.

Hi,

I don't know if it is related to the same reason (that's why for the moment I don't confirm I have this bug, too), but I have a similar problem.

I ran a fresh install of Ubuntu 15.10 (complete new one), updated, and in January I decided to upgrade to Ubuntu 16.04 at early stage on my Personal Computer - to test and because generally even pre-betas work already fine.

Restart, login, general use... all is OK, except I also don't have any desktop : only the background, no icon, none of my folders / files "saved" on desktop appear.

There are well visible in Nautilus, and I well get Unity panel + for all other programs, the top bar with menus etc... All works perfectly.

Just I have the desktop screen totally empty - and right click of mouse on it, or putting it on the top black bar, does nothing...

I did not try to remove upstart at this time.

This should be duped against https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/upstart/+bug/1537610 as it's the same issue.
