Unity greeter depends on defunct upstart - Unable to login.

Unity greeter depends on upstart, ubuntu-desktop depends on unity-greeter, and unity depends on unity-greeter. Upstart causes all sorts of issues in a modern system that is running systemd, search the bug tracker for " Could not connect to Upstart: Failed to connect to socket /com/ubuntu/upstart: Connection refused" Because of this dependency when I try and purge upstart to make my system actually login (.xsession-errors shows a call to upstart-udev-bridge which fails) I have to switch to a completely different desktop environment. Upstart is deprecated and should be removed from dependencies as fast as humanly possible so we can all forget that chapter in linux development.

Upstart is not deprecated and is still in use as the session manager in Ubuntu even with systemd in use as the init manager. Systemd does not offer equivalent functionality and there are not plands to add them.. If you remove critical desktop components, you break your system and it is not a bug.

I suggest you google "upstart desktop fails," "upstart desktop fails to load," "upstart blank desktop" and look at the 168,000 results (for just upstart desktop fails). Considering that you can write a graphical shell that doesn't use upstart, and people have for ages before upstart, and they will for ages after upstart this still is a valid bug.

I have the same problem also. I have tried on both ubuntu 15.10 and ubuntu 16.04 with no luck.

This one hurt. I'm installing for a new, curious about linux user and the live USB was fine. Installation crashed and I find no fixes after two days of searching. We'll go with Mint Rosa which installed just fine. This may be the last of Ubu for me.

Yeah especially when developers done want to fix issues. I have recommended
a lot of people go to mint. It's stabler and dev's actually care about the
users. Hopefully, the comments/tone Stephen Webb used aren't reflective of
the whole attitude of the Ubuntu dev's. I have to believe they understand
doing what's best for the user.
